Treaty 2 Territory – While many of the Nations in the Territory commemorated the making of Treaty 2, in August of 2021, Skownan First Nation postponed their event in light of the Pandemic and in an effort to ensure the wellness and wellbeing of citizens in their Nation.

Treaty 2 was made at Manitoba Post on August 21, 1871. That said, we are still in the 150th Year since Treaty was made with representatives of the Queen of Great Britain, and Ireland. With it being only a few days to the anniversary date, Skownan hosted an incredible one day event on August 17th, 2022.

The 8 hour agenda included a lunch followed by a Grand Entry as the North Wolf Ojibway Singers from Ebb & Flow shared their Flag Song, and Victory Song. Loretta Ross of the Treaty Relations Commission shared words on the meaning of the Treaty, and the healing, discussions and work that we need to continue to strengthen and maintain that Treaty relationship.

Guests were honoured to watch and listen to little Gabriella Maud speak Anishinaabemowin, and the Oo-Day-Mina Singers as Inter-tribal demonstrations were performed.

Jigging and Square Dancing Performances energized the crowd as Theoron Anderson played fiddle backed up by his brother Darin of the Mosquitoz.

Following supper break, guests were invited back to enjoy the sounds of Indian City, and Northern entertainer Richard Farrow.

Our Treaty 2 Territory Government commends the Skownan First Nation on hosting today’s incredible commemoration event along with their Nation’s Treaty Day Celebrations last week.

Miigwech for inviting us to be a part of this significant event.
