Treaty 2 Territory-Gambler First Nation turned the soil on their urban reserve in Brandon, Manitoba Friday afternoon.
Gambler First Nation Chief David Ledoux was joined by City of Brandon Mayor Rick Chrest, Manitoba Minister of Indigenous and Northern Relations Eileen Clark and officials from Indigenous Services Canada and First Nations in Treaty 2 Territory Grand Chief Eugene Eastman at the ceremony, which was attended by about 60 people.
Gambler First Nation is among the smallest in the province, with less than 100 people living on reserve near the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border, south west of Binscarth, Manitoba.
“This has been a long time coming,” said an elated Gambler Chief David Ledoux. “Hopefully this property will be dedicated for use so that Gambler is here forever and our youth are going to be around forever. We’ll have security for hopefully seven generations.”
The land, a 3.5 acre property located off of 18th Street in Brandon’s north end is expected to house a gas bar and gaming center initially, with larger scale plans long term.
Ledoux says plans are in place to develop the property fairly quickly, with construction to begin on the gas station and gaming center in early summer with opening set for the fall and is expected to create between 20-30 jobs.
Brandon Mayor Rick Charest feels more people will be pulled off the Trans Canada Highway to the reserve, which benefits everyone.
“The more that we get services and commercial activity pushed out the Trans Canada Highway really just helps the whole city,” he said.
