Treaty 2 Territory-Every once in a while an idea becomes reality.
In the spring of 2018 staff at Treaty 2 discussed the idea of replenishing fish stocks in Dauphin Lake.
The idea got better as the conversation grew (as did the fish but we’ll get to that in a bit.)
Skownan elder Wesley Catcheway offered that the Skownan Fish Hatchery could be utilized for the incubation of fish eggs from Dauphin Lake.
Wesley along with a few students from Keeseekoowenin First Nation collected eggs and sperm from the spawning areas of the Turtle River and Mink Creek.
Students from Keeseekoowenin assisted with the collection and Elder Wesley took care of the incubation, transporting the eggs to the Skownan hatchery and allowed nature to take it’s course.
Three weeks later 500,000 fish were released into the Turtle River and Mink Creek, divided as carefully as one could divide a half million fishies.
